Court Annunciation No. 1962 of La Grange and Plum, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, held its May 27 meeting at the Sacred Heart Parish – Msgr. Harry Mazurkiewicz Center.

The evening began with a social at 6 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. with opening prayers, especially remembering deceased member Marge Rosenberg for whom the Charter was draped. Pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags were recited. Some of the highlights from the meeting were as follows.

Received as new members were Ruth Ann Streiff and Leticia Jaimes. Regent Sherry Hebert administered the pledge and Vice Regent and Membership Chairman Marilyn Kothmann assisted.

The annual clergy appreciation gift for Chaplain Fr. Chris Smith was finalized as were other clergy gifts. Deacon Kingsley Ohaeri will be ordained to the priesthood on June 14 in Austin and his ordination gift was chosen.

The Junior Catholic Daughters will continue visiting Jefferson Place during the summer months and distribute the CDA Court’s monthly goody bags. The 31st Biennial Texas State JCDA State Convention will be held in San Antonio on June 27-29.

On behalf of CDA Texas State Court Memorial Scholarship Chairman Rebecca Brown, Court Annunciation No. 1962 Scholarship Committee Co-Chairmen Elizabeth Kallus and Stacy Ryza presented her congratulatory letter and named the four winners the Court had sponsored along with their qualifying relatives. Scholarships were awarded to La Grange High School graduates, Joel Orlando Solorzano, $1,000, mom Leticia Solorzano and sisters Sophia, Mia, and Ale Solorzano; Ely Glisson, $1,000, mom Ramona Glisson, grandmother Theresa Wagner, aunt Dr. Regina Walker; Celeine Fabre, $1,500, mom Jamie Fabre, grandmother Polly Supak, and aunt Peggy Supak; Wylie High School in Abilene graduate Mackenzie Kates, $1,750, and mom Stephanie Kates.

Court sponsored winners on the State level in the National Education Contest were awarded their State Certificates and monetary prizes by the Court’s Education Contest Chairman Rita Sulik. Division I - 2nd in Poetry and 3rd in Essay, Helen Streiff; 2nd in Computer Art, Ethan Scott. Division II - 2nd in Art, Makenna Emmel; 2nd in Photography, Aby Garza. Division III - 3rd in Art, Ella Nygren; 2nd in Poetry, Madison Markwardt; 2nd in Photography, Jaylia Lucio. Division IV - 3rd in Photography, Sophia Solorzano.

Annual monetary gifts were given to the following: Mark Hebert, AMEN board of directors’ representative and Sacred Heart volunteer coordinator, accepted the gift along with the food items members donated; Sacred Heart Church youth ministry coordinator Leticia Solorzano received the donations on behalf of Vacation Bible School, to help with the cost of t-shirts for children, and the high school religious education program SHOCK; and JCDA members with Counselor Peggy Supak accepted their gift. A previous donation had been given to La Grange High School for the Senior day trip.

A motion was made and carried that Court Annunciation No. 1962 donates snacks and drinks for the Sacred Heart Parish 570 E. Pearl Street Youth House for the summer months of June and July as part of its Catholic Daughters Youth Circle of Love program.

Mary Lou Anderle, Local and State Spiritual Enhancement Chairman, coordinated the closing Memorial Day Prayer Service in remembrance of our fallen heroes. The symbols of the branches of the United States Armed Forces were displayed along with a crucifix; and candle bearers presented candles for each branch during the service.
