A Piece of Carmine History
According to “A History of Carmine” by Tony Buban, the first car dealership was started in the early 1900’s. It was a Ford dealership started by Adolph Krueger, and in conjunction with this, Oscar Shilling and Oscar Jacob established the first garages.
Years later A.H. Ullrich, opened a Chevrolet dealership, first next to City Garage and then he moved to Hwy. 290 on the south side of Carmine, now Spur 458.
Richard Pohl had City Garage and was a sub-dealer for Ford and GMC vehicles. The garage is still open. It was also run by J.C. Pohl and now Jody Pohl.
Herbert Noak and Emil Roski ran the Texaco Station and also sold Buick vehicles. Don Steinbach worked there and remembers pumping gas and washing windshields until they were spotless. It was located where the Village Market now stands.
E. P. Jacob, Sr. owned Highway Service Station.
Willie Kuhn had a service station with Humble gas near the former Jacob’s Store. Gas was pumped up into a glass container on top that measured zero to 10 gallons and then emptied into the car’s gas tank.
