A car caught fire and sparked a small grass fire on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department got the call around 4:15 p.m. According to Fire Chief Frank Menefee, the driver was heading north on US 77 when the car suffered a blowout on its right side. The driver pulled off the highway onto Hausmann Gin Rd. to call for help.

The blowout started some kind of fire on the right side of the vehicle. It spread to the grass in the ditch and the pasture on the south side of the road. La Grange VFD responded with a fire engine, tanker, one quick response truck and a command vehicle. The car was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. The engine crew began fighting the car fire while the quick response truck entered the property and put out the small grass fire. It burned less than an acre. The blaze gutted the car. It was a complete loss.
