Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host its fourth annual Archeology Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. This family-friendly public event offers a perfect weekend outing to explore the historic sites while discovering the fascinating world of Texas archeology. Attendees can look forward to handson activities, artifact exhibits, brewery tours, and giveaways.

This year’s lineup of activities includes mock excavations, mapping exercises, pinch pot making, a bottle craft demonstrating soil stratigraphy, and more. “We’ve designed these activities to introduce visitors to the scientific methods that archeologists use in the field,” says Sites Educator Jenny Townzen. Participants will test their problem solving and creativity skills in activities ranging from drawing and measuring artifacts to making educated inferences based on the odd assortment of items put in front of them.

Archeology Day is a fun, memorable, and educational experience suitable for the whole family. Young visitors are encouraged to participate in the various hands-on activities using a “field notebook” filled with fun facts and interactive worksheets. Once they complete each of the activity stations, they’ll receive a “Junior Archeologist” prize bag to take home as a reward. Adults will appreciate these activities as well, but they can also enjoy unique archeologyfocused tours of the Kreische Brewery and take advantage of opportunities to visit with THC archeological stewards who are particularly knowledgeable about our local area.

“While we’d like to think that our sites and programs help inspire the next generation of professional Texas archeologists,” says Townzen, “we know all Archeology Day attendees walk away with a better understanding of their community’s past and a renewed respect for the materials our ancestors left behind.”

Saturday’s events are part of the overall Texas Archeology Month—a celebration of the state’s rich archeological heritage, the importance of practicing archeology, and the encouragement for all to act as advocates for our shared past. Events are held across the state throughout October.
