OBERON: “ I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows, Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine, With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine: There sleeps Titania sometime of the night, Lull’d in these flowers with dances and delight; And there the snake throws her enamell’d skin, Weed wide enough to wrap a fairy in: And with the juice of this I’ll streak her eyes, And make her full of hateful fantasies.”

Thus begins the midsummer magic of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream—a play filled with vivid imaginings, mistaken identities, love potions, fairy music and mischief, the unexpected joy of becoming lost and then found again, and hardhanded men who never labored in their minds till now performing their version of love. Set in a world rich in language, rapid in movement, and riveting in its elements of magic and wonder, Midsummer is one of Shakespeare’s finest stories of love both requited and unrequited.

The new group of Camp Shakespeareans will begin tackling the play upon their arrival in Fayette County on Sunday, June 9. This is the 24th summer for Camp Shakespeare, a program for exploring Shakespeare through performance begun by University of Texas professor Jim (Doc) Ayres in 1964 and found its way to Winedale in 1970. Ayres now enjoys the role of “Director of Mission,” working with students on the language, having passed the directorship to Robin Grace Soto.

“An enchanting odyssey filled with playfulness and determination. This tale truly has something for everyone!” Soto said. “It is a timeless story, and we are honored to watch these young Shakespeareans bring it to life.”

Reservations for the performances are recommended but not required. For additional information about performance dates, times, and locations and to make your reservation, please email robingracesoto@ utexas.edu or call (830) 460-1221.
