Burglars Snatch a Load of Loot
Thieves who broke into the John Miller home several miles south of La Grange on the old Mullins Prairie Road made with off with a variety of items and left the interior in a topsy-turvy state. The burglary was believed to have occurred between 3 and 6 p.m. when the Millers were away shopping. A color TV, roaster oven, blender, sewing machine, slide and movie projectors, two cameras, two radios, a typewriter, an electric shaver and a small amount of cash were taken.
Round Top Postmaster C.W. Wagner announced the retirement of Mrs. Lydia L. Nagel, who had served as a clerk in that office since March 1958. Mrs. Nagel was born and raised in a small community of Sandtown near Ledbetter. She was married to Donald Nagel, the mayor of Round Top.
A 5,593-acre resort property in Bastrop County was acquired by Tahitian Village Corp., a subsidiary of Houston- based First National Alliance Corp. The firm making the purchase said construction would start in 1976 on a resort and recreational community featuring six and a half miles of river frontage.
Neal Miller, the quarterback of the La Grange Leopards, was named player of the year and Ben Bloomer was named coach of the year on the 1974 Class AAAll-Centex football team by The Austin American-Statesman. Miller, the 178-pound senior who guided the Leopards to the AA semifinals, passed for 1,936 yards and 19 touchdowns during the season, completing 99 of 209 attempts. He also ran for 598 yards and scored six touchdowns.
Edmund Luck, the postmaster and owner of Luck’s Food Store in West Point, sustained a left leg fracture in a freak accident early Friday afternoon. Deputy Sheriff C.A. Prilop reported the chain of events that led to the injury. It began when Mrs. Charlette Atwell of West Point, who had been shopping at the store, was en route home when her car stalled about a quarter of a mile south of West Point. She walked back and got Mr. Luck, who hooked a battery cable from his car to Mrs. Atwell’s 1966 Olds. The car must have been in gear because it plunged forward, catching Mr. Luck’s left leg just below the knee. He was taken by Bexar County Ambulance Service to Fayette Memorial Hospital in La Grange, where he was recuperating.
Mrs. Elo Schertz reported that 1974 rainfall seven miles east of Fayetteville amounted to 64.2 inches. She had taken over the rainfall reporting from her late husband.
Fayette County Commissioners approved the delinquent tax record for the years 1972-73 as presented by Assessor-Collector Gilbert H. Eck. The list showed $12,999.21 remained unpaid. That included arrears of: $678.32 in state levies, $2,990.01 in county taxes and $844.94 in school taxes. That number broke down by district to: $4,627.63 – La Grange; $2,524.72 – Flatonia; $752.41 – Round Top/Carmine; and $581.19 – Fayetteville.
Albert Killian, 26, of Winchester, graduated from Victoria College in exercises at the Texas Jaycee Education and Training Center in Gonzales. Suffering from cerebral palsy, Albert was one of 10 graduates, nine in wheelchairs, to graduate from the program with an associate of arts degree in accounting.
Jeanette Krause, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lorenz Krause, received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Sam Houston State University.
Roger D. Moellenberndt, the son of Mr. and Mrs. K.A. Moellenberndt of La Grange, graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor of arts political science degree.
Funeral services were held for: Edward C. Weishuhn, 85, of La Grange; Mrs. Annie Julia Hollub, 75, of La Grange; Mrs. Alice Simmank Voelkel, 78, of Shelby; William F. Graeber, 68, of Carmine; and Joe Matocha, 80, of Flatonia.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Noack observed their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Dec. 29, by attending the morning services at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester, where the Rev. A. Brand gave a prayer in their honor. Their granddaughter, Mrs. Billy Karisch, sang ‘How Great Thou Art.’ Mr. and Mrs. Noack were married Dec. 26, 1924, at St. Michael’s by the Rev. Alfred Bohot.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Buscha honored their parents on their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29 at the home demonstration building at the fairgrounds. Miss Elsa Giese and Herman Buscha were married on Dec. 26, 1924, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda by Pastor Buchschascher. The couple had four children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
