Bluff’s Inaugural ‘History on Tap’ Details Finalized

Bluff’s Inaugural ‘History on Tap’ Details Finalized

Brewing has been a Texas tradition since at least the mid-1800s, and one that German immigrant Heinrich Kreische embraced on his own property in the 1860s and 70s.

By 1878, Kreische’s brewery--now a state historic site— produced enough to rank as the third largest operation in Texas.

“Kreische was ingenious in the construction of his brewery on his land, but he was also successful in getting his beer into the hands of drinkers near and far,” says Assistant Sites Manager Gavin Miculka. “Likely one of his largest customers was the Bluff Schuetzenverein, a German social organization that met on Kreische’s land to celebrate special occasions, hold marksmanship competitions, dance to folk music, and freshen up with his latest brew—a tradition we hope to celebrate at our upcoming Texas History on Tap.”

On May 14 from 5-8 p.m. the Friends of the Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites invite the community to celebrate the history of beer in Texas and the history of Texas in beer. The inaugural Texas History on Tap event promises historic beer recipes from favorite Texas craft breweries, live music, a dance floor, and plenty of outdoor fun for those who enjoy a cold pint on a warm day. “We are planning a celebration of beer and the history it holds in Texas,” says Friends group President Katy Beauford. “I’m sure Kreische would be glad to see that more than 150 years after he opened his brewery the spirit of community is still strong.”

Breweries from across Texas will be represented at Texas History on Tap. Most featured breweries will also have staff on hand to answer questions and share how their beers embody Texas history and identity. Local favorites La Grange Brewing Company and Hound Song Brewing Company will be joined by Live Oak Brewing, Altstadt Brewery, Twisted X Brewing, Saint Arnold Brewing, Real Ale Brewing, and more. A full list of breweries is available on the event webpage. Some breweries have even crafted special release beers that will debut at this year’s Texas History on Tap.

While sampling a variety of beers on tap, guest can also purchase German dinner plates, prepared by and benefitting Fayette County Habitat for Humanity. The evening’s entertainment lineup includes country singer David Lewis from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the Austin Polka Band to close out the event, 6:30-8 p.m. Yard games and scenic views of the Bluff at dusk also await. Tickets to this unique event include a sampling card for up to eight types of beer, a commemorative beer tasting mug, music, yard games, and access to food for purchase. Additional purchases of full pours of beer and wine are also available. Tickets are discounted through May 7, so guests are encouraged to purchase tickets soon. Ticket proceeds will support education and preservation efforts at Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill.
