Big Flag Day Event Planned In LG Sunday at Courthouse
This is Next Big Event Put on by County’s America 250 Committee
A celebration will be held at the Fayette County Courthouse for Flag Day at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.
This year, organizers are pulling out all the stops to celebrate 250 years of American independence and 249 years of the American Flag.
“On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution that ‘The flag of the United States shall be of 13 stripes of alternate red and white, with a union of 13 stars of white in a blue field, representing a new constellation’,” according to the program that will be handed out to guests at the event. “In 1949, Congress approved that June 14 be observed each year as Flag Day throughout the nation.”
A flag was jumped from a vintage World War II plane in France on June 6 by Dustin Blackwell in memorial of the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, which was June 6, 1944. That flag will be folded and presented to County Judge Dan Mueller at the ceremony.
The rest of program will be put together by the combined efforts of numerous organizations from around the community, including the local VFW, Daughters of the American Revolution, D’Vine Testament, and more, along with Bob Heinrich being the MC for the event.
Judge Mueller, Larry Jackson and Charles Murray of the Texas Heroes Museum are scheduled to give speeches.
As part of this celebration of the patriotism of our nation, Jamie Fabre will be announcing the 31 winners of the more than 900 coloring contest applicants.
There will be 250 hot dogs available for guests at the event.
Woodmen Life is donating small flags for attendees and is also coordinating to have some massive American Flags on display as part of Sunday’s ceremony.
