A community benefit for Susan Williams will take place at Popz Star Bar in La Grange on Saturday, Sept. 20. Williams is the woman who was wounded in the shooting incident that took place at Popz Star Bar on July 28.

The benefit will include a barbecue brisket meal prepared by Leo Hall and friends. Plates are $20. Purchase tickets by calling or texting Debbie at (737) 677-9213 or Hanna at (979) 966-8582. Plates can be purchased on the day of the event as well. The meal will be served 4-6 p.m.

There will also be a silent auction from 3-6 p.m. Contact Debbie or Hanna to donate silent auction items by Sept. 10. A benefit account has been set up at Fayette Savings Bank. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the bank.

“Susan has been out of work since the shooting, and our community is coming together to help her,” said Kim Cantwell, one of the organizers.

All proceeds will be used to assist Williams with medi-cal and living expenses while she is unable to work.

“Susan Williams is an outstanding and upstanding citizen of La Grange who did absolutely nothing wrong,” Cantwell said. “She was shot by a bullet that was never meant for her, and she now faces lasting trauma to her legs. It will be a long time before she finds relief from lost wages and the costs of recovery.”

The July 28 shooting happened inside Popz Star Bar after Craig Moreau, 45 of Round Top, carried a pistol inside the bar. The gun fired inside his pocket. The bullet struck Moreau’s leg and wounded Williams through both of her legs.

Moreau pleaded guilty to unlawful carry of a weapon in a prohibited place, a third degree felony, in Fayette County District Court on Aug. 13. As part of his plea deal, Moreau agreed to pay for Williams’ medical expenses not covered by her insurance.

“Yes, medical coverage was granted in the recent plea deal, but anyone who’s been through this knows: bills take time to process, co-pays still come due, and rent doesn’t wait,” Cantwell said. “Susan is already shouldering these burdens. Susan has always been one of the first to give back. She supported the La Grange football team through every year her son played, and when he graduated in 2024, she was still the mom who would give the shirt off her back for her community. Now, it’s our turn. It’s time for La Grange to step up and help Susan the way she has always helped others.”

“It will be a family-friendly, positive event focused on supporting Susan and reminding folks that Popz Star Bar remains a welcoming neighborhood spot,” she added.
