Annual Remembrance at Monument Hill for Texas Heroes Day is Saturday
Commemoration and special programs for Texas Heroes Day will take place in La Grange on Saturday, Sept. 14. Though rooted in reunions hosted on Monument Hill since 1848, Texas Heroes Day was officially established as a Texas Honor Day in 2012 by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Today, many organizations honor the past and present service of Texans in the military with Texas Heroes Day events hosted throughout the state.
In La Grange, Monument Hill State Historic Site will host its annual Monument Hill Remembrance Ceremony at 10 a.m. This ceremony honors the Republic of Texas soldiers killed in the Dawson and Mier Expeditions who are entombed on Monument Hill. This year’s ceremony will feature special remarks from La Grange Mayor Jan Dockery, as well as the traditional wreath-laying ceremony and gun salute led by costumed reenactors. Presidents of the Monument Hill Chapters of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Sons of the Republic of Texas will also offer remarks.
Admission fees are waived for ceremony attendees. Seating for the ceremony may be limited and personal lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged. The remembrance ceremony will be streamed on Facebook for those unable to attend in person.
Additionally, the Faison House will be open for two special presentations following Monument Hill Remembrance. At noon, Nathaniel Faison, portrayed by President of the Faison Preservation Society Arnold Romberg, will tell his firsthand experience as a member of the Dawson Expedition and his imprisonment in Perote Castle. At 1 p.m., Julia Sinks, depicted by local historian and author Marie Watts, will tell the story of Fayette County’s Texas Heroes. After the presentations, guests are invited to explore the house and learn about its former residents and their roots in La Grange. The Faison House will be open noon-4 p.m.
