Algae to Be Cleaned From the Courthouse
The Fayette County Courthouse will get a bath ahead of the United States 250th Anniversary celebration planned for next year.
Commissioners Court met last Thursday and approved a contract with Bell Tex Construction to remove black algae from the exterior walls of the courthouse, sidewalks, Veterans Memorial and the Old Fayette County Jail.
Steven Svec, who heads up courthouse maintenance for the County, said Bell Tex performed the same work in 2016.
Bell Tex quoted the County $16,189.08 for washing the courthouse and $10,705.62 for the Old Jail.
“This is for washing the courthouse top to bottom, the monument, Veterans Memorial, and sidewalks,” Svec said. “This will get it cleaned up for next year’s activities.”
The County is planning a big celebration on the Courthouse Square next July 4 to mark the Nation’s semiquincentennial.
Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom said the exterior walls cannot be pressure washed due to the soft stone that makes up much of the exterior. Bell Tex will use a chemical to remove the black algae that stains the walls.
Svec said funds are available in the courthouse maintenance budget to cover the cost. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the contract.
