1976: A Bus in the Bedroom? Yes, Indeed
The front end of a Continental Trailways bus landed in the bedroom of Jimmie Washington at West Point during a three-vehicle traffic accident. The mishap, which occurred just west of the narrow Southern Pacific underpass at 4:45 p.m., involved a 1972 Silver Eagle Continental Trailways bus, a 1971 Ford U-Haul truck and a 1976 Olds four-door sedan. Although there was significant property damage, miraculously, no one was seriously hurt.
The La Grange Jaycee Demons were ready to flip the switch on a new quartz lighting system at Fair Park on Friday night when they were hosting a doubleheader with Temple, a strong semi-pro club.
Texas Comptroller Bob Bullock reported that checks had been mailed to Texas counties for processing their voter registration certificates. Fayette County’s share was $3,603.20, approximately 40¢ per registration for the 9,008 certificates issued by the office of Fayette County Assessor-Collector Leonard Dominey.
Gaylon Georges, a 1976 graduate of Round Top-Carmine High School, captured the state tie-down roping title at the Texas State Champion High School Rodeo in Hallettsville. He took the championship with an average time of 33.1 seconds on three head of calves. Gaylon won a trophy saddle, buckle and $200 scholarship to the college of his choice.
“Plum Wonderful,” officially opened on Saturday. The 192 acres of wooded, rolling land that was divided into 5- to 14-acre tracts onehalf mile south of Hwy. 71 at Plum, was available through Bob Fritsch and Associates.
Round Top revived an old tradition at its Fourth of July festivities: the firing of a Civil War cannon that somehow found its way to Round Top in the 1860s. It was a part of every July 4th celebration until it exploded on July 4, 1889.
At Muldoon, the Village Mill owned by Gene and Virginia Birge was operating a grist mill at the back of the general store that ground cornmeal. The meal was available in two-pound bags at local stores.
Composer David Guion, who wrote “Home on the Range,” attended a special program in his honor at Festival Hill in Round Top. Guion’s life and musical contributions to America were told in a lecture-recital, introduced by James Dick, founder and artistic director of the Round Top Festival. The parlor of the William Lockhart Clayton house was the setting for the program and a reception followed in the Dalies Frantz Music Chamber courtyard.
The basic 1976 (loan) price support for grain sorghum graded No. 2 or better would be $2.30 per hundredweight in Fayette County.
The Fayetteville ISD board of trustees approved a tax increase of 7% from $1.13 to $1.20. Superintendent Ben Cobb said the increase was necessary because some $6,000 in anticipated taxes was not collected due to large land sales in the area.
Peggy Jean Miller, the daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Miller and the late Hugo Miller, was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas School of Nursing.
La Grange city police issued a reminder that discharging fireworks of any kind anywhere in the city violated a city ordinance.
McKenzie Homes was selling a brick four-bedroom, two-bath, two-car-garage, two-story home in Bluff Haven for $39,500. The home of approximately 1,700 square feet had thick carpeting and upstairs and downstairs central air and heat units.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Mary Ann Kainer, 76, of High Hill; Frank Sieber, 68, of the Vienna community; Mrs. Alice Laura Seidel, 61, a native of Round Top; Fritz C. Maas, 88, of La Grange; and Benjamin J. Divin, 47, a native of Ellinger.
A surprise silver anniversary party was held for Mr. and Mrs. Robert Janda of Austin. Miss Lora Jean Dippel and Robert Janda were married in La Grange at Zion Lutheran Church on June 16, 1951. Two attendants from the original wedding party, Mrs. Luther Weiss of Brenham and Mrs. Otis Wagner of Swiss Alp, were present at the 25th anniversary celebration.
Among the lads named to the roster of the La Grange Regular Little League 1976 All-Star Squad were: Yankees - Michael Mach and Mitchell Roberts; Indians - Kevin Bippert and Randall Freudenberg, Mark Prause and Joey Strmiska; Dodgers – John Heimsath, Steven Krebs and Mark Matocha; Cardinals – Bernard Munsch and Jody Supak; and Giants – Joe Krnavek.
