Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bell of West Point were honored on their 60th wedding anniversary on August 17 by their children with an open house at the Plum Dining Room.
A four-event celebration took place on Sunday at the New Ulm home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Machinsky. The family celebrated the Machinsky’s wedding anniversary, Mr. Machinsky’s birthday, their son Robert’s birthday and their son Daniel’s graduation.
Kara Graham, the 17-yearold daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burleson Graham, was crowned Miss La Grange at the La Grange RecreationalAssociation’s annual aqua show. The new Miss La Grange, who was chosen over 19 other contestants, was sponsored by Round Top General Store. Sherri McAfee, sponsored by The Journal, was first runnerup and Liz Stevenson, sponsored by Clothes Closet, was second runner-up. Shannon Brugger, sponsored by Classic Beauty Shoppe, was winner of Little Miss Mermaid honors. Runners-up and their sponsors were Robin Voss, Albers Hatchery, and Sheila Doehring, Bohot-Todd. Chosen as Little Mr. Muscleman was Adrian Muniz, sponsored by Gold ‘n Crisp. First runner-up was Bradley Olenick, sponsored by Bohot-Todd. Lee Braver, sponsored by the Noon Lions Club, was second runner-up.
A 15-acre pasture and meadow grass fire in the Waldeck community posed a threat to several small barns before it was doused by units from two fire departments. The blaze was on the farm of Mrs. George Ullrich, about two miles north of Waldeck on the Ledbetter farm road. The Ledbetter Fire Department, which was first on the scene, contained the fire, while La Grange firefighters helped with the cleanup. Also on the scene was the Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral services were held for: Alton Beno Marburger, 73, of Round Top; Mrs. Marie Drager, 73, of La Grange; Leo Hartfield, 83, of Round Top; George Vaclavik, 64, a native of Fayetteville; Mrs. Grace J. Dudensing, 75, of New Ulm; Mrs. Albert A. (Annie) Schultz, Two area youths aged 12 and 14 admitted to putting sand in the gasoline tank of a Precinct 2 maintainer over the weekend near the Park community. The sheriff said the parents of the perpetrators agreed to make restitution for the damage.
La Grange Independent School District trustees authorized a budget approaching half a million dollars, adopted a relaxed hair and dress code, and reviewed higher prices for just about everything. The 1975-76 budget of $1,406,780 included a $140 raise for teachers and other personnel. With regard to the dress code, Superintendent C.A. Lemmons said regulations required identical rules for male and female students. Among the items termed inappropriate in the revised dress code were hair long enough to fall over the eyes, hairstyles that extended two inches or more from the side of the head, mustaches, beards, goatees, unusual sideburns, and hot pants, seethrough blouses, skirts with hemlines five inches or more above the top of the knee cap and bare feet.
Miss Ima Hogg, Houston’s foremost patron of the arts, daughter of Texas’s first nativeborn governor and Round Top area benefactor, passed away on Tuesday in London, England, at the age of 93. Miss Ima was best known in Fayette County for buying and restoring the Stagecoach Inn in Winedale and then donating the two-story, 10-room inn and grounds to the University of Texas.
Adult season tickets for the 48th annual Fayette County Country Fair went on sale in La Grange at both local banks, the chamber of commerce office and Austin Savings. The ticket prices were as follows: daily admission, $2; students, $1; and season pass, $4. The higher admission costs reflected the cost of hiring several costly internationally known entertainment features that would be offered free to fair-goers, as well as increased costs for just about everything that went toward making a good fair.
Mr. and Mrs. Cyril R. Kallus of La Grange celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on August 16 at Hostyn with a co-celebrated Mass at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The Rev. Har Season tickets for the five La Grange Leopard home football games would go on sale for $10 at the school’s business office on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Reserved seats located in the center section of the stands would be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
When Social Security marked its 40th birthday in 1975, about 31 million Americans were getting checks averaging $202 for a retired worker and $472 for a widowed mother with two children in her care. The Social Security Act became law on Aug. 14, 1935, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against... poverty-stricken old age.”
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Karstedt Sr. of La Grange celebrated their silver wedding anniversary on August 16 in the Warrenton Hall. Vernon Joe Karstedt and Bertha Mae Seidel were married onAug. 16, 1950, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ammannsville.
