18-Wheeler Rolls Over Near RTC Elementary

A local truck driver suffered minor injuries in a roll over in Round Top on Monday, April 7.

The crash happened around 3:18 p.m. on SH 237 near Round Top-Carmine Elementary School. According to a report from Trooper Megann Ruiz of the Texas Department of Public Safety, 43-year-old Sean Elliott Knebel of Ellinger was driving the 18-wheeler. The truck had just left a location in Round Top and was heading north on SH 237, Ruiz said.

Ruiz said Knebel reported that he felt the back of the rig shift and tried correcting the steering. The truck slid off the steep embankment along SH 237 and rolled onto the passenger side. The load of square tubing came off the trailer and scattered into the ditch.

Round Top-Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. Fire Chief Calvin Krause said that upon arrival, he feared the driver was still stuck inside. The crash partially crushed the cab of the 18-wheeler. Thankfully, Knebel was able to crawl out on his own.

Fayette County EMS Assistant Director Gary Daniels said the driver suffered minor injuries. EMS transported him to South Austin Medical Center as a precaution.

Round Top-Warrenton firefighters along with Pct. 2 Constable Roger Wunderlich worked traffic control while waiting for the wrecker to haul off the 18-wheeler. Personnel from the Texas Department of Transportation cleared the cargo from the roadway.
