Nature Doesn’t Care

To the Editor: I recently received a recording of my 3-year-old granddaughter reporting new words she learned at day care. The words were “inappropriate” and “dangerous.” I can only imagine these words were used to correct bad behavior.

Too Much Squash?

I started harvesting some cushaw squash last week, and boy, are they big. This type of squash is a member of a somewhat lesser- known species, Cucurbita argyrosperma.
Some of my cushaw squash weigh over 20 lbs. a piece.

I Said, Whoa!

The year was 1950. One of my daily chores was to make sure the milk cow was in the pen each evening so my Mom could milk her.

Light in the Darkness

This past July 4th weekend felt a little bit different as we heard of the tragedy of the flooding in Kerrville, Texas. The rain that has continued over the week seems like an external sign of the inward stirrings of many across the great state of Texas. My heart, I know along with many others’, continues to ache for those families who lost children and loved ones in the horrific catastrophe. May our prayers rise to the Heavens for consolation and hope in the midst of the darkness.

“Lady Bountiful” – Saint, Sinner Or Both?

Lillian Knox, once the prime suspect in the staged suicide of her timber tycoon husband, was back in the news on July 15, 1939 following her arrest in Los Angeles on warrants out of Dallas and Shreveport.

The Big D district attorney announced that the infamous “Lady Bountiful,” the nickname bestowed upon Knox by East Texas admirers, would be extradited back to Texas to face seven counts of check forgery. The postal inspector in Shreveport quickly added that the unlikely fugitive had a date in federal court on charges of mail fraud.

We the People at 250

To the Editor: As the 249th July 4th passes, we should examine the health of our nation in preparation for the 250th celebration which will be trumpeted, but perhaps not justified. At 50 year intervals, the Fourth has been celebrated during the presidential terms of John Quincy Adams, U.S. Grant during the highly contentious presidential campaign of Rutherford B.

Gravel Pits and Arrowheads

To the Editor: Gravel companies are now digging up thousands of acres of Fayette County for sand and gravel (and have been for decades) to truck to Houston and Austin to put down more concrete. What were once cotton and corn fields and cow pastures owned and used by several generations of descendants of German and Czech immigrant farmers are gone and are now mostly just big pits in the ground that are difficult to use for much of anything.

Less Screen Time

To the Editor: Imagine a world where children were the chosen target of annihilation. They were the victims picked to be brainwashed and left on the streets of confusion.

Kudos to Vincent

To the Editor: Mayor Vincent continues her efforts to bring the Town of Round Top’s property into accordance with the legal requirements of the State of Texas. After careful consideration at the Special Meeting on July 1st, the Council unanimously approved moving forward to continue to support the Historical Society and to complete and update documents that allow the Historical Society to continue their vital efforts to preserve Round Top’s heritage.
