Unity, Understanding Needed

To the Editor:

Pictures from the rally on the square on Sept. 26 were not sent in as “Protest” pictures. They were sent in with the word “Unity?”.

Standing side by side with signs that said, “Political Violence Not Acceptable” and “Peace,” the rally goers should not be interpreted as “dissenters.” This implies acceptance of the present divisive atmosphere in Washington.

Instead, the lesson from this should be that our congressmen of both parties should be standing side by side with each other and communicating. If they did, the government would not be shut down. Essential workers. like air traffic controllers and medical researchers, would not be furloughed or asked to work without pay.

The “usual smattering of anti-Trumpsters with their signage” are citizens who don’t want their children and grandkids to think they were silent when their constitutional rights were threatened and, in some cases, taken away (i.e., free press, free speech, justice for all citizens, rule of law). This includes access to health care and the election of moral leaders.
