July 24-31, 1970 Trustees of the La Grange Independent School District accepted the bid of La Grange State Bank for five-year warranties to cover purchase of two new school buses, stiffened its policy with respect to the vaccination of schoolchildren and decided to re-advertise for bids on the house built by trades students of the Area Vocational High School. Board President Dr.

Margaret Atkins and Rhoda Gersch have set Aug. 22 and Sept. 26 for the first fall Quilt Block classes. Classes will be limited in size so that social distancing may be maintained, face masks will be required and hand sanitizer will be provided. The class will be held at Zilss Hall in Winchester and will start at 10 a.m. Registration is $50 per person and must be received prior to the class. All supplies will be provided. Over this weekend you might have noticed the amount of rain we have had due to Hurricane Hanna. The rainfall totals are around 1-2 inches of rain which is very much needed this time of year. Hanna is not an anomaly but is making waves as it is the eighth earliest named storm ever. This is setting us up for an extremely active season for storms in the Gulf as the ocean surface temperatures are ranging from 80 to 90 degrees, giving any systems that move through those very hot waters some extra energy to grow. On that note, there is tropical storm Gonzalo just off the coast of Venezuela that is tracking towards the Gulf Coast in a few weeks time.

July 3-7, 1970 The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department was investigating thefts at a Houstonian’s weekend place three miles north of Round Top. Three saddles, four bridles, an electric clock, a vacuum cleaner and a variety of tools were stolen from the Harold Schneider home and workshop.

My husband told me I couldn’t do it. I showed him or did I? We have a sink in our garage which has been very useful over the years.

From coronavirus, murder hornets, racial injustice and the upcoming presidential election...I’m waiting for someone to say, “You have now entered The Twilight Zone.” Growing up and even now I still love the tv show The Twilight Zone. I feel like each episode teaches you a valuable and important lesson. Yes, in some episodes you do have to really think about the meaning of the episode or rewatch it and many times the episode is open for multiple interpretations. One of my favorite episodes, which I believe has a clear message, is the episode titled, “The Masks.”

I have continued my look back to the 1940s and decided to recall what toys were invented or introduced in the United States during that decade. Here are some I found, and most of them I remember.

To the Editor: With thanks to the leadership of Mayor Janet Moerbe, La Grange is following the leadership of science and medical experts. Her courageous vote for mask wearing, in order to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, challenges the political atmosphere of “making our own decisions.” For the sake of doctors and nurses who care for COVID patients, first responders who continue necessary services, school teachers who are considering the risks of “in-person” instruction, and anyone whose livelihood is threatened by the spread of the coronavirus, all precautions need to be in place.

To the Editor: People we are losing our liberty a little bit at a time by bending to foolish rules that are of dubious efficacy and even questionable legality. The governor has ordered that everyone must wear a mask when in public.
