that little voice

I’m writing more about the Day of the Dead celebrations held in Mexico and Latin America countries annually on November 1-2; two days of reverence I have come to appreciate and respect. I Have a Plan: If I Were Campaigning

It seems that every candidate for any office today has a plan. I remember years ago every candidate for president had a plan to reduce the oil imports that was crippling our economy. President Carter created the Department of Energy. One of its duties was to make America less dependent on OPEC oil imports. This plan did not work. Every presidential candidate until the last election had a plan to make America less dependent on foreign oil, however it only got worse. Good Plan?

Dante’s Inferno: The Saga Continues

One of the sweetest fruits of friendship is the inside joke. When a buddy cuts a one-liner in company, and you are the only one to belly laugh, those on the outside are made to feel…well, outside. He is drawing from a shared history that not everyone has access to. The same thing is true with reading. Great authors like Dante often assume, or demand, that their readers have read certain works and can therefore pick up on literary illusions. Think of it as the insidejoke for bookworms.

The Limits of Free Speech

October 19-25 is Free Speech Week. The First Amendment written in 1791 states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The Mask Debate

To the Editor: In the recent issue of The Fayette County Record, Judge Weber defended the mandate set forth by the Governor and that the actions would be determined to be legal or not by the Supreme Court. So I’m trying to understand what constitution Judge Weber is trying to defend.
