Greedy Columbus

To The Editor: In reading a recent letter in The Fayette County Record about the comments about Christopher Columbus, I felt they were right on the money. Some things were left out concerning Columbus and future explorers to the New World.

What IS History?

To The Editor: A letter in the October 15 issue of the Record makes some very good points, but begins with a very misleading statement, to wit: “history is neither an absolute nor absolutely set. History is fluid and as we learn more about the past the way we view history is subject to change.” These quotations demonstrate a very unfortunate confusion between two very different aspects of the meaning of the word “history.” The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary (10TH edition 2001) gives as its first definition of “history” the following: “a chronological record of significant events often including an explanation of their causes.” Its second definition is “a branch of knowledge that records and explains past events.” Both of these definitions have two parts (a) recording events and (b) explaining them.

That Little Voice

Home is where the heart is. But what if you have several homes, or spots that call to your heart? I’ve had several residences, but to be called ‘home’ has depended on the people in my life at the time, the memories I formed there, and if I want to ever return.

Socialism Not Good In Any Form

To the Editor: In reference to a letter in last Friday’s paper… It’s sad that we continue to have to explain that socialism in any form is bad to those who think it’s a good idea. One major point: Nothing.

Kelley’s Healing Garden

To the Editor: What a joy it was for me to receive a copy of the Fayette County Visitors Guide for Fall/ Winter 2021 from a friend and read on pages 20 and 21 about St. Mark’s Medical Center being named among the Top 100 Rural and Community Hospitals in America.
