All Books Not Equal

To The Editor: Got a good laugh from Jeff Wick’s column “I don’t think library book banning is ever a good idea.” Interesting in light of the robust history of more than 200 years of careful selection of books available in public schools based on community norms, including Fayette County Texas, which is the same outcome as “banning.” Consider Madonna’s book “Sex,” and we immediately see the fallacy of Mr. Wick’s remarks.

It’s a Southern Thang

My daughter, Melissa, gave me two wall plaques for the sunroom. I spend much of my time there because looking out at the water has always calmed me. One reads “Heaven is Just a Little Bit Closer Beside the Water” and the other one reads “The SAU-TH (SOUTH)”

Early Voting Begins on Eight Proposed Amendments

If history is an indicator, Texas voters will likely go to the polls on Nov. 2 in underwhelming numbers to decide the fate of eight proposed amendments to the state’s constitution. With no statewide races on the ballot, and a scattering of local elections for city council and school board, turnout typically is low. Nevertheless, early voting is now underway and continues until Oct. 29.

Small Town Living is Great

To the Editor: After visiting a church member, I walked to my car and heard a kitten. I asked the lady if she had a kitten, and she said that she did not.

Not Hero Worship

To The Editor: I was surprised to see my name in the first sentence of Mr. Green’s letter titled “View of History Can Change” in last week’s Fayette County Record.
