Questions About the COVID Vaccine

To The Editor:

These facts seem to me to be incontrovertible.

1. COVID vaccinations do not represent any risk whatever for the average person. People who have received the vaccinations are not at any increased risk of becoming ill with COVID or any other disease or medical problem because of the vaccination.

2. COVID vaccinations do significantly reduce the possibility of a person becoming ill with the COVID disease and also almost invariably reduce the severity of the illness if it is contracted.

3. People who are naturally resistant to the disease as a result of having experienced it are more resistant to it than people who have not had it and are vaccinated. Hence those people do not benefit from vaccination.

4. COVID has been with us for about twenty-one months, since March 2020. During that time it has been very injurious to our society and our national economy, causing illness for over 70 million people in the United States and over 850,000 deaths, and disrupting the lives of many more.

5. The appearance of a new variant late in 2021 caused cases to rise significantly.

Here are some observations that I believe to be true:

a. Many people who are refusing to be vaccinated against COVID are doing so because they believe that this is an important expression of their objections to government control of their personal lives.

b. There are few signs that we are getting this pandemic under control. Further new variants are certainly possible. The pandemic could perhaps go on for years.

c. If everyone in our population were vaccinated, the infections and deaths would probably be reduced to a very small fraction of the current rate.

This leaves me with the following questions:

A. Why are the people who refuse to be vaccinated willing to accept what seems to be a consequence of their refusal, namely the significantly increased risk of infection and possible death to them and their like-minded friends?

B. Does their refusal to be vaccinated have any significant effect in maintaining our freedom from government controls and mandates?

C. Are there not much better ways of expressing one’s commitment to reduced government control of our lives – ways which do not involve needless medical risks for many of our citizens?
