Pressure Cooking

By the time we enter our Medicare years, most of us have accumulated a great deal of information about an enormous variety of subjects. Access to the internet cubes the quantity with no guarantee of quality. We all know this.

That Little Voice

When is enough ‘enough’? I recently read a piece that ended with “I wish you enough.” I couldn’t help but wonder, enough of what? Enough money? Enough love? Enough happiness? Enough sadness? Enough to feel safe? Enough determination? Enough sunshine? Enough what? When do I have enough? When will I feel satisfied? When is my desire sated enough to stop seeking, working, struggling, learning? Or is desire never abated? And, depending on the issue, the question remains: when is enough, enough? Some will say when you have enough. Oh, that’s helpful, and when is that? And what does ‘enough’ look like? If I make more money will I continue to strive to have more? And if so, why? When I feel at peace in a certain place, will I settle in, take my shoes off, sit on the front porch swing, and be content? Or will I get bored, letting discontent wash away my peace like a wave removing footprints in the sand? Then I’m off, once again, in my search for peace.

Remember When

Fayette County Sheriff T.J. (Jim) Flournoy announced on Monday morning that he and his department were going to crack down on the increasing number of anonymous telephone calls requesting an ambulance be dispatched. A total of five such calls were received on Sunday. One call for an ambulance and fire truck asked they be sent to the Southern Pacific crossing on Hwy. 95 just north of Flatonia. An ambulance, fire truck and highway patrol car rushed to the location, but found nothing amiss when they arrived. “We’re going to make every effort to find out who is making these calls, and, when we do, we are going to prosecute them,” the sheriff said. In the future, the only collect calls for an ambulance that would to be accepted would require the caller to give his or her name and the number from which he or she was calling.

A Local Doctor Reacts to St. Mark’s News

To the Editor: Hi, Dr Shannon Juno speaking! Many of you have likely heard the news that St Mark’s hospital will no longer provide surgical and inpatient services after this week. This abrupt change came as a surprise to us as we had surgical procedures scheduled at the St Mark’s surgery department into next month.

Vouchers Make Schools Worse

To the Editor: Fayette County children of every race/color, income or faith should have the freedom to learn and pursue their dreams in a great public school, regardless of ability, where they live, or what they look like. But some of our elected officials and private special interests are trying to funnel public dollars into private schools by pushing voucher programs that divide families against each other and worsen the quality of schools where most of our kids learn and grow.

Blood Keeps on Flowing in Texas Feud

T EXAS History (Last week Beal Sneed shot and killed the father of a childhood friend, who has run off with his wife. At his 1912 trial, a Fort Worth jury deadlocked seven to five in favor of acquittal forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.) The Tarrant County district attorney wasted no time in announcing he would try Beal Sneed again for the murder of Albert Boyce, Sr.

Gardening Advice from a Desert Father

An elder said: “In the same way that no plant whatsoever can come up on a welltrodden highway, not even if you throw seed on it, because the surface is trodden down, so it is with us. Retire quietly from all (worldly) business and you will see things growing that you did not know were in you, for you were walking on them.”
