Vouchers Make Schools Worse

To the Editor:

Fayette County children of every race/color, income or faith should have the freedom to learn and pursue their dreams in a great public school, regardless of ability, where they live, or what they look like. But some of our elected officials and private special interests are trying to funnel public dollars into private schools by pushing voucher programs that divide families against each other and worsen the quality of schools where most of our kids learn and grow.

Weakening public education while citing “failing” public schools as justification for optional voucher programs is unconscionable. While educators across Texas work to deliver our children accurate and honest education, some decision makers are trying to censor what’s taught, deliver our shared resources to their wealthy donors and keep us divided so we don’t join together and demand better public schools for all children.

Together we can demand an end to the practice of giving public resources to private schools, so nothing stands in the way of us providing every child in Texas a quality education in their neighborhood.
