Train Depot Gets Grant for Repairs

A $12,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of La Grange will pay for a historically accurate paint job for a 125-year-old former railroad depot that is now home to a railroad museum.

VFW Auxiliary Installs New Officers

At the May 17 meeting of the VFW Auxiliary #5254 of La Grange, officers were installed for the ensuing year, from left, President Marilyn Kothmann. Senior Vice President Twila Thurman, Junior Vice President Barbara Brauner, Treasurer Anna Boyd, Chaplain and Three Year Trustee Mary Gray, Conductress and Secretary Elizabeth Kallus, and Guard Lorine Bertsch. Moving into their new positions but not needing to be installed were One Year Trustee Jeannie Bertsch and Two Year Trustee Peggy Sulik. The officers will assume their duties at the next monthly meeting to be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, at the VFW Post Home in La Grange.

LGISD’s Kleiber Named WhataTeacher

During a special ceremony Friday at the La Grange Performing Arts Center, La Grange Middle School reading teacher Karissa Kleiber, right, was presented a $1,000 check for winning the Whataburger WhataTeacher award. The presentation was made by Curt Harbers, left, of La Grange Whataburger. During the ceremony LMS principal Dr. Sarah Otto praised Kleiber’s work, saying, “she is an inspiration ... she makes a difference on our campus as a leader and radiates her love for her profession ... students in her class leave loving to read.” Working with local school administrators, education foundations and school districts for teacher nominations, Whataburger wants to honor teachers who have made especially great impacts on their students and in their communities. The WhataTeacher awards are part of Whataburger’s Feeding Student Success program, which focuses the company’s charitable giving on community philanthropy targeting needs at the intersection of food insecurity and education. Local Farm Bureau Awards Scholarships

Jordan Elizabeth Sommer and Blake T. Meyer were awarded scholarships from the Swiss Alp/ Ammannsville/Dubina Farm Bureau. Jordan’s parents are Melissa and James Sommer. Jordan plans on attending Texas A&M University, College Station. Her proposed college major will be Animal Science. Blake is the son of Virginia and Thomas Meyer. Blake plans on attending TSTC - Richmond Campus. His proposed college major is Associates in Welding. Bishop’s Awards Given at St. Rose

Each year the Bishop gives out awards to eighth graders in the Victoria Diocese who meet the criteria of a theology test and Christian behavior in doing service for their schools, parish and community. On Monday, May 16, the St. Rose Eighth Grade received their certificates from Bishop Cahill at an Evening Vespers prayer service and ceremony in Hallettsville. St. Rose was also in charge of the music and readings for the event. Readers were Reagan Dusek, Grace Schramek and Kenna Oliver. Music ministry was provided by teachers and students: Matt Bonner, Lindsey Schiffli, Allison Machac, Wendy Becka, Donna Kunz, Jackie Machac, Zuriel Robles, Conner Lichnovsky, and Bryn Bubela. St. Anne’s Society Meets

The meeting of the KJZT St Anne’s Society No. 10 was called to order at 1 p.m. on May 17 at St. John’s Recreation Hall. President Mary Jane Toddy opened the meeting with prayers for all living members and their families and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

LG Students Inducted into Blinn Honor Society

Seventeen students from La Grange High School were recently inducted into the Blinn College chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society. Mu Alpha Theta is a National High School and Junior College mathematics club for honor students that is co-sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America.
