Camp Invention Held at La Grange Elementary

On June 19-23, La Grange Elementary hosted Camp Invention for kids across the county. Each day, students rotated between four stations, learning about entrepreneurship in Pop-Up Venture, robotics in Mimic Bot, basic physics in Catching Air and event planning in Invention Celebration, among other things.

Hostyn, Plum Youth Attend Catholic Heart Work Camp in North Carolina

Seventeen teens and six adult chaperones from the Hostyn and Plum Catholic churches attended the Catholic Heart Work Camp service week in Morganton, North Carolina June 11-17. The group included the priest of both parishes, Father Felix Twumasi. Above is the group after landing at the Charlotte airport. Below are some images of the work the locals did during the week, including painting, cleaning tombstones and removing mold. The kids spent the week staying at the North Carolina School for the Deaf campus in Morganton, where they also attended daily morning Mass and evening worship programs. About 150 people from around the country were part of the work camp. They worked at needed areas throughout the community every morning and afternoon – at homes of the elderly and disabled, churches and outreach centers.

Wanted Federal Fugitive Arrested After Trying to Flee on a Motorcycle in LG

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 28, the Fayette County Narcotics unit received information about a wanted subject with an active federal arrest warrant staying in the La Grange area. The information received indicated that the subject was known to be armed and dangerous. The narcotics unit located the subject staying at the Carter Motel.

From Venezuela To Round Top

Cellist Andres Avila grew up surrounded by music. His father studied musicology and played a traditional Venezuelan instrument named the cuatro, and his brother was a double bass player who moved to the United States to continue his music studies.

LG Garbage Rates Could Be Going Up

Waste Management wants to raise garbage rates for La Grange residents by 10 percent. The company’s contract with the City, which expires in 2026, allows Waste Management to raise rates by no more than five percent annually.

Kerr Joins LG City Council

La Grange City Council voted unanimously last Monday to appoint Bryan Kerr to the vacant Council seat representing Ward 4. Kerr has lived in La Grange for the past eight years.

LG Council Talks Budget, Insurance Spikes

La Grange City Manager Fred Bell reported at last Monday’s City Council meeting that he has been meeting with department heads to formulate next year’s budget. The City hired Bell earlier this year to replace former City Manager Shawn Raborn, who retired last year. Bell praised the City’s history of financial stability. He said the City’s sponsorship of the Munigas Corporation many years ago has helped to keep the City on a sound financial footing.
