Camp Invention Held at La Grange Elementary
On June 19-23, La Grange Elementary hosted Camp Invention for kids across the county. Each day, students rotated between four stations, learning about entrepreneurship in Pop-Up Venture, robotics in Mimic Bot, basic physics in Catching Air and event planning in Invention Celebration, among other things.
“We got to walk into the rooms, so when they wanted to explain something, I would just get so happy,” said Sherry Schmidt, camp co-director. “They were just so into explaining why this worked like this and why that worked like that. That, to me, is the best thing.”
Each year, there is a theme for the week, and this year’s theme was ‘Camp Invention Wonder.’ The intention for the theme was to encourage students to wonder how different things in the world work, whether that be a business or electricity. Over 31 students received scholarships from Second Chance, Texas Women’s League and the Stanzel Foundation to attend the camp this summer. In total, there ended up being 126 campers in attendance, with a majority of them being returning There were also 12 student leaders, which is the highest number of leaders the directors have seen in recent years at Camp Invention.
“We’re appreciative of them because they do donate their time and the campers just love them,” said Krista Pietsch, camp co-director. “They’re the reason why camp works, because they watch the kids and help transition them between stations.”
Registration is already open for next year’s camp at www.invent.org/programs/ camp-invention. Spots fill up quickly, so make sure to sign up as soon as you can.
