The Fayetteville Lions won the Region IV-1A title with authority Thursday. And it’s earned the defending state champ Lions a berth in the state semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.

In heartbreaking fashion, Schulenburg’s amazing baseball season game to an end in the regional final Thursday in Katy in a 2-1 loss to Iola. The game was a scoreless tie until the sixth inning when Iola pushed across two unearned runs against Schulenburg starting pitcher Connor Lichnovsky.

Fayetteville-native Lawson Fritsch had a stellar freshman year of collegiate pole vaulting at McNeese State, in Lake Charles Louisiana, capped off by a second place finish at the Southland Conference Meet last week in Nacogdoches.

Coach Shawn Bruns announced his retirement back in January from Flatonia ISD effective June 30th after spending his entire 35 year career with FISD. For the first 19 years Coach Bruns was the elementary PE coach while coaching high school sports.

Kobi Valchar of Schulenburg earned All-Lone Star Conference honors for his performances at the 2026 LSC Outdoor Track Championships. Valchar was third in the discus, second in the hammer throw and seventh in the shot put at the conference meet.

When the Fayetteville baseball team won the state title last season with six seniors on the team, some outsiders might have thought the Lions’dynasty on the diamond might be coming to an end. “People weren’t expecting us to be where we are,” said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger, whose team is playing this week in the regional finals for the sixth consecutive season.

La Grange High School hosted a state-qualifying 7-on-7 state tournament Saturday at Leopard Stadium. Bay City earned the state berth by winning the tourney and Bay City also won the lineman challenge. The Schulenburg baseball team (28-6) is trying to make it to the state semifinals for the second consecutive season as they take on Iola (20-4) in the regional finals in a one-game playoff series this Thursday at 5 p.m. at Cy Lakes High School in Katy.

A pair of La Grange High School grads helped their college track teams to relay success at the Big 12 Outdoor track Championships this weekend in Arizona. With a season-best time of 39.38 the Baylor men’s 4x100 relay team including La Grange’s Austen Diggs finished fourth.
