Fayetteville baseball player Jack Schley has started his high school tenure off with a bang as he recently qualified for state track in the triple jump. As track and baseball seasons intertwine, Schley has provided a heavy workload for a Fayetteville baseball team that is threatening to head to states for the second time in three years. He has 18 runs, 15 RBI’s, is 4-1 as a starter on the mound, and comes from an athletic family. Schley is the grandson of Fayetteville coaching legend Emil Schley and the son of former Fayetteville baseball state champion Daniel Schley.

Acouple of readers messaged the newspaper asking why we reported that Fayetteville’s Chance Konvicka had thrown a no-hitter last week against Round Top-Carmine in the playoffs, when one local radio station reported the game as a one-hitter. As a refresher, with two outs in the last inning of the Lions 10-0 victory Wednesday, Round Top-Carmine’s Carter Marburger hit a infield grounder and reached base ending the perfect game. Upon our video review of the play in question, Marburger was two steps away from reaching first when an on target throw to Konvicka, who was covering first on the play, hit off his glove and bounced away, allowing Marburger to not only reach first, but end up on second. Thus, the play in our interpretation was an error and the no-hitter maintained. That’s also how Fayetteville head coach Clint Jaeger interpreted the play postgame – an error. There are no official scorers at most high schools games (and the play in Navasota was not designated as either a hit or an error on the scoreboard), so any other media outlet can call it a one-hitter (based on how they saw it without the benefit of instant replay). Another radio station broadcasting the game did call the game a no-hitter as well. We stand by our original reporting. – Jeff Wick

The Flatonia baseball team was eliminated by Kenedy in the regional quarterfinals over the weekend. In a best-of-three series Kenedy won Game 1 4-2 and Game 3 by a 7-5 score.

The Fayetteville baseball team will get its rematch against the D’Hanis team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year. The Lions will face D’Hanis in a bestof- three series for a berth at the state tournament.

La Grange senior C.J. Davis signed a letter of intent to play football with Blinn College in Brenham. La Grange High School held a signing ceremony for him inside the High School Gym last Friday, May 19.
