Schramek Shines in Shorthorns Win

Schulenburg football player Brycen Schramek made two crucial plays in order to help will his team to their third win of the season on homecoming night last Friday. In a 10-0 bout vs Hearne High School, Schramek booted a clutch 25-yard field goal midway through the third quarter and also legged a monster punt on a snap that went over his head, cradling the ball and running for space, then sending it all the way down to Hearne’s side of the field. Schramek’s dad, Buck Schramek, also was a punter at Schulenburg. “Brycen was big for us,” said Schulenburg head football coach Luke Hobbs. “Every point matters. Especially in a defensive game like we had where offensive points are hard to come by. He flipped the field very well for us whenever we punted. His kickoffs were amazing, too. He had a PAT, he had a field goal, and that’s four points right there and tons of field position, so he was just huge for us and was a very big part of the win.” Schramek’s much needed playmaking has made him our selection for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.

Question: What’s the most rewarding part about playing football?

Answer: “Probably the energy in the locker room after a big win, like we had on Friday.”

Question: Do you play any other sports besides football?

Answer: “I play baseball and I play golf.”

Question: Who’s a NFL kicker you look up to?

Answer: “Probably Harrison Butker or Justin Tucker.”

Question: What’s something that stands out to you about this team as the program is being turned around?

Answer: “The attitude of us players. We have all come together as a family. Band of brothers and our work ethic is through the roof, and our coaches giving us energy.”

Question: Would you rather hunt or fish?

Answer: “Hunt”

Question: Who’s a teammate you usually sit with at lunch or team meals?

Answer: “Probably Tyson Wagner.”

Question: If you had to dress up for Halloween, who would you dress up as?

Answer: “I’d dress up as the marshmallow guy from Ghostbusters.”

Question: What’s your favorite candy?

Answer: “Snickers”

Question: You made that crucial punt in the Hearne game and your dad was a punter at Schulenburg as well. What lessons has he taught you when it comes to punting?

Answer: “He’s taught me all the situations on how to go over them, and Coach Marty Bigham, I’ve done what he would’ve done in that situation, so I guess he was proud of me.”

Question: What’s the most enjoyable thing about attending Schulenburg?

Answer: “Probably knowing everybody in your class and having a lot of friends.”

Schramek’s leg, knowledge, and overall athleticism has paid big dividends for Schulenburg football.
