Janecka Comes Through Big After Being Named Flatonia Starting QB; Earns County Athlete of the Week Honors
Flatonia football player Cale Janecka was recently named the starting quarterback last week and has proven he’s the right man for the job. In a comeback victory over Falls City last Friday, Janecka led his team to a check mark in the win column with 196 yards passing and two crucial touchdowns in the second half.
“Cale is a great teammate and a great player, but he’s even a better young man,” said Flatonia head football coach Brent Mascheck. “That’s what I’m so proud of. He did not start at quarterback. We were kind of rotating him, but he just kept fighting and battling and everyday and he got better in practice. We named him the starting quarterback this past week and he had a huge game. I think that proves a point to everybody out there. Just keep working at it and good things are going to happen to people like that.
“He’s a great young man and he had a great night the other night. He does a great job of leading our offense. He’s very calm. Makes sure everybody’s in their place and stuff like that. He threw the ball extremely well, which is going to help our running game and things like that, so I’m so proud of Cale because other kids could’ve shut it down. He didn’t. He kept fighting and kept getting better. We decided to make the change to go full time with Cale and he did a great job Friday night.”
Janecka not only taking over the quarterback spot, but flourishing in it has given him the nod for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: What changes have you noticed about the team with the new-look coaching staff?
Answer: “I feel like this coaching staff is very good. They’re very talented and they have helped us a lot this year.”
Question: What’s been your favorite moment about the football season so far?
Answer: “I think the big win last Friday was the funnest moment so far because Falls City is a good football team.”
Question: If you could be a part of any movie, what would it be?
Answer: “Probably Superman.”
Question: Where’s a place you go for good chicken?
Answer: “I like to go to Popeyes.”
Question: Who’s a music artist you like and why do
you like them?
Answer: “I like Parker McCollum because he’s just good to listen to.”
Question: What do you spend your time doing when not playing football or in school?
Answer: “I like to hunt and fish when I’m not playing football.”
Question: What would you say is the most important part about the quarterback position?
Answer: “I think just staying calm and keeping the offense under control. Just making good decisions with the ball.”
Question: If you could play for any NFL team, which would you play for and why?
Answer: “I would play for the Cowboys because I’ve always liked the Cowboys. They’re just my favorite team.”
Question: What’s something interesting about you that a lot of people may not know?
Answer: “Football is not my favorite sport. I enjoy baseball more than I like football.”
Question: If you could add one place or thing to the town of Flatonia, what would it be?
Answer: “I would get a Whataburger in Flatonia.”
