Hollek ‘Setting’ the Standard for LG Volleyball

The La Grange volleyball team has an impressive array of senior and junior hitters.

But for them to do anything, they’ve got to get the ball delivered at the right moments – and sophomore Gabby Hollek has stepped into the starting setter’s role this season and never looked back.

She’s among the team leaders in almost every stat, and has been a stabilizing presence on the court for first year La Grange volleyball coach Cierra McCain.

“When I first met Gabby I thought this girl has it, and then when I saw her in games, this girl is running all over the court. She is phenomenal,” McCain said. “She knows how to work it. She is running it, getting the ball where she needs to for the hitters. She knows how to execute.”

McCain says one of the best parts of Hollek is that she’s still young.

“I can’t wait to see what it’s like the next two years I have her,” McCain said.

We caught up with Hollek minutes after she helped engineer a big comeback win over Brazos Tuesday.

“We definitely came together as a team. We had a lot of errors, but the crowd and the bench, their encouragement really helped us push through,” Hollek said.

Hollek was a part-time setter last year on varsity as a freshman.

“Last year was nerve wracking and transitioning into this year has been easier because I was already on varsity,” Hollek said. “I’m surrounded by people who are encouraging me so it’s easy to step in and play that position.”

“Our hitters, they are incredible. They adjust to any set no matter what and they handle the pressure really well.”

Next week the Lady Leps and Hollek turn their attention to the most important part of the season – district play.

Hollek said the biggest keys to success in district for her team will be “pushing through our mistakes and not getting down whenever we do mess up – just having the confidence that we can win.”
