Friday Football Previews

La Grange vs. Smithville

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Smithville Records: Both teams are 1-4. Of Note: Smithville is averaging just 16 points per game this season and just 71 yards per contest on the ground and 83 a game through the air. Take away the Tigers’ seasonopening 37-0 win over Austin and those numbers look even worse. By contrast, the Leps have had no trouble scoring most of the season, even tallying 63 points in a win over Splendora last time out, which snapped their four-game losing streak. The Leps seem to be grasping the fast-paced offense of new head coach Kyle Cooper, whose son Clayton had a hand in five touchdowns against Splendora. Defense has been another story as the Leps are allowing 51.6 points per game.

Last meeting: Last season La Grange lost to Smithville 14-10. The Leps only points came from a touchdown pass from Bear Meng to Nate Scott and a Phillip Arceneaux field goal. Smithville held La Grange to just 185 total yards. Smithville QB Derrick Roberson ran for a touchdown and threw a 54-yard TD pass to Ramonz Adams.

Hearne, meanwhile, is coming off a 10-0 loss to Schulenburg. Scoring points has been a issue for the defensivelygifted Eagles all season and they are averaging only 12.4 points per game. Their only victory this season came against Elkhart.

Last meeting: Flatonia defeated Hearne 35-20 last season as Fidel Venegas ran for two TDs and threw for TDs to Jaidyn Guyton and Dayton Cliffe.
