Locals Celebrate Juneteenth on the Square

Juneteenth celebrations got started early with an event on the Courthouse Square in La Grange on Saturday, June 13. Rev. Leo Vaughns Jr. (pictured above) performed some rousing gospel music as local folks gathered for fellowship and food on the courthouse lawn. Juneteenth celebrations this weekend include more gospel music on the Square Friday evening, a parade on Saturday, and a community worship service Sunday.

Recalling Frau Tiedt’s Elementary School German Classes

Sixty years later, some of my clearest memories of Hermes Elementary School in La Grange involve German lessons from Frau Tiedt. German-speaking citizens have been in our area since at least 1831, when Friedrich Grasmeyer was granted a quarter league of land along the Colorado River at the current Fayette-Bastrop County Line.

June Events Planned Across Local Senior Connections Locations

Our activity center, based in Schulenburg, with satellites in Weimar and Flatonia, welcomes anyone 55 years and up. With a free membership, fantastic friends, and fabulous food, there is no reason you shouldn’t have a whole lot of fun. Schedule is the same across all three locations, with doors open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We meet in Schulenburg on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for our Artful Friday classes. On Tuesdays, we take turns in Weimar on the first and third Tuesdays and in Flatonia on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Each morning, members arrive, are greeted by our volunteers, and are served coffee, tea, or water as they gather around the game tables to play their favorite games.
Paul Williams just had to ride the mechanical horse in front of the Lyric Ice Cream Parlor in Flatonia. Our June adventure began with lunch at Darlin’s Diner, then a movie at the Lyric Theater, and finished the day with ice cream; 27 members joined for this fun outing.

Candy Shop Sweetens Up Downtown La Grange

Bartley’s Snack Shop opened earlier this spring at 244 N. Washington St. (next to the Depot museum) and they have steadily added new items. They have classic and new candies and Blue Bell ice cream among other items. Above, recent La Grange High School graduate Nataley Polasek works the counter. Right is the exterior of the building.

New Exhibit at Czech Center Pays Homage to America 250

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange recently set up a new exhibit inside their museum to celebrate the United States’ 250th Anniversary (pictured above). The exhibit features three timelines covering important events from the past 250 years in America, Texas and the Czech Republic. TCHCC Historian Carolyn Heinsohn and TCHCC Geneologist Janice Hrncir compiled the information on this exhibit. TCHCC also upgraded signage and photographs in its permanent exhibits thanks to a generous grant from the Czech Embassy to the United States.

Going for the Marigold

Marigolds are some of the easiest flowers to grow. Most folks are familiar with French marigolds ( Tagetes patula) – the short-statured varieties with orange or yellow double- bloom flowers that come in a variety of color patterns. These grow well in pots or in the ground.
This year, I’m growing some African marigolds in my vegetable garden. Here’s a clump of them planted along the edge. Photo by Andy Behlen

Juneteenth Proclaimed by City of LG

La Grange Mayor Jan Dockery (center) signed and read a proclamation at Monday’s City Council meeting designating June 19 as Juneteenth in the City of La Grange. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the enslaved people of Texas were first informed of their freedom. On hand for the signing were Christy Johnson (left) and Gloria Ellis (right) of the La Grange Juneteenth Committee.
