Senior Connections Kicks Off La Grange Site

This is an exciting week for Senior Connections because we will start our satellite in La Grange on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Join Senior Connection son Tuesday, Aug. 4, at First United Methodist Church at 301 W. Saint Charles St., Weimar. Schedule is the same today, with the doors open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and our homecooked, nutritious meal will start with beef stroganoff by Amanda Kridel, which will be served with our famous garden salad topped with seasonal fruit and garlic bread. Lunch and Learn program will feature Garren Bivens with B-Holistic in Weimar, a new business that sells natural healthcare products, and Alyssa with First Texas Home Health will be in the house to call the bingo game.

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, Senior connections will be open in Schulenburg. The menu includes chicken fried steak and gravy from Connie Koopmann Catering, which is sure to pack the house, so you better get here by 10:45 a.m. to get a good seat. It will be served with green beans and our house salad, and of course there will be dessert. We go straight into bingo on Wednesdays in Schulenburg, and Kelly Sobotic with Crown Hospice will be here to call the game.

Also on Wednesday, Senior Connections opens in La Grange at the Randolph Rec Center at 653 E. Pearl St. We will celebrate our new satellite, and for lunch, the menu will include Amanda Kridel’s famous lasagna paired with the salad and garlic bread. We are sure to please our new members with this mouthwatering dish. Since this is the first day of the program in La Grange, be sure to get your name signed up for the dessert list for the rest of the month. At 12 p.m., the luncheon’s guest speaker will be Officer Kevin Currington with the La Grange Police Department. At 12:30, the bingo caller will be Emily Bellue-Scott with Monument Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. We’re so excited about this opportunity and hope that it will be a big hit. Make sure to share this info with your friends and family. One thing that will be a little different in La Grange is that they will close at 1:30 p.m., not 2 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 7, Artful Friday continues at 1206 Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg.

This day kicks off a new month for art classes at Arts for Rural Texas from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. We are so grateful to this organization for their partnership in providing these amazing classes and opportunities for our seniors. You must be signed up to participate in these classes. You can call the center at (979) 743-3227 to sign up. Most classes are already full, but you can get on the waitlist in case somebody cancels. We wish we could add a third class, but there isn’t room. Jaime Janda will not be teaching the painting class this month. Susan Grooms will be teaching acrylic painting. We’re excited to have her back, and Steph Shroyer, will be teaching the junk jewelry class. We serve a lunch afterward, thanks to Brenda Ray, our amazing Volunteer.

Members are encouraged to stay after lunch if they need to work on any unfinished projects. Will be there until 2 p.m. Today is the first day to begin delivering your art pieces for the Ageless Artistry Showcase that will open on September 12 with a reception from 3 - 5 p.m. at Jack’s Gallery in the Turtle Wing building at 1203 S. Kessler Ave. next to the On Point dance studio. Artwork in any medium by any of our members can be dropped off at 1206 Lyons Ave. between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. or contact me at (979) 702–1246 to make other arrangements. You do not have to be a student of our art for Friday classes to participate. We asked that participants please consider donating one or more pieces of art to be sold for a fundraiser for the capital campaign for our new building.

David McCall will be teaching a safe and secure program for Senior Connections members and other seniors in the community on Aug. 27 at our Schulenburg facility from 9 a.m. - 12 noon. We will serve a late lunch following the presentation. This will cover home safety, safety while traveling, and selfdefense techniques that will be a hands-on portion of the program. If you’re interested in participating, please call the center at the number below to get your name on the list so we can plan accordingly.

Our August adventure is set for Thursday, Aug. 20. We will be visiting the Czech Heritage Museum in La Grange, then the Texas Polka Museum. The folks at the Polka Museum are even going to feed us.

Did you know that our membership is free. The food sure is fine, and the friendships just can’t be beat. There’s something for everybody here at Senior Connections for anyone 55 and up.
