Oktoberfest on the Square is just around the corner. On Saturday, October 2, from 3 p.m.-7 p.m, the Rotary Club of La Grange is ready to bring you the best event yet. Oktoberfest is all about tradition, a traveling fun festival celebrating beer and rich German social customs has been around for over 200 years and is still celebrated annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and La Grange.

One of the busiest firefighting days in years kept local responders hopping from one fire to another Wednesday and then resulted in the county enacting a burn ban the next day. “We responded to six fires in all that day, but we were fortunate that they were kind of spaced out,” said La Grange fire chief Frank Menefee.

Cullen Weishuhn was crowned the 2021 Schützenkönig in Round Top Sept. 19. Cullen prevailed in a three-way shoot-out to take the crown of “Shooting King” with a 35 out of 36 perfect score. He was crowned that night (above) at a ceremony at the Round Top Rifle Hall. This was the 149th annual Schutzenfest.

Bryson and Courtney Beseda of La Grange welcomed their third son, Bexten Wayne Beseda, born Aug. 28, 2021 at 6:02 a.m.

The Fayette Public Library, Museum & Archives will close to the public on Friday, October 1, 2021 to complete a redesign of the library downstairs. In March of 2020, the library received a $50,000 grant from the Tocker Foundation to purchase new furniture and shelving. The Tocker Foundation supports Texas public libraries in communities of 12,000 or less. The grant funds will add interactive, vibrant furniture in the children’s room, create a space for teens, add new flexible meeting room furniture and replace all shelving.

The Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) and Keep Schulenburg Beautiful Fall Sweep cleanup is part of a statewide campaign running September 11 through November 20. Originally launched to celebrate KTB’s 50th Anniversary, KTB brought back the program due to its major success and popularity, with helpful funding from HEB. The KTB Fall Sweep is a program to support the efforts of KTB affiliates, nonprofits, volunteers, corporations, scout groups and communities to organize fall cleanups. It will also serve as the Ocean Conservancy’s inland International Coastal Cleanup effort in Texas.

If you’re looking to start beekeeping, spring is the best time to set up a hive. But start planning early in the fall as there are many things to get ready. Most important is pre-ordering your bees in the fall because suppliers run out quickly in the spring.

The La Grange High School National Honor Society held its induction ceremony for new members last Monday at the high school gym. The ceremony included descriptions of the four ideals of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character.
