A fire at the Banks Ranch near Ellinger on Tuesday, Jan. 11, destroyed a utility vehicle and burned about two acres of pasture. Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department received the call around 10:51 a.m. Ellinger Fire Chief Larry Bartosh said the fire started when some tall, dry grass came in contact with the hot engine of the utility vehicle while a ranch worker was driving it in the pasture. Ellinger VFD responded with two brush trucks, a tanker and nine firefighters. They brought the fire under control around 11:30 a.m. No one was injured. Photo by Andy Behlen

A motorist on SH 71 stopped and helped to put out a grass fire that started across the highway from the Timeless Texas Classics car dealership. The La Grange Volunteer Fire Department arrived moments later and extinguished the blaze. It is unknown what caused the fire. Tall grass that died in the recent freeze provides ample fuel for fire, especially in dry and windy conditions. Anyone burning should exercise caution Photo by Andy Behlen
