As of Jan. 14, the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter closed the week with 121 animals in care: 74 cats; 47 dogs. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.

Two women died and another man remains in critical condition following a head-on collision on US 77 near Rabbs Prairie on Sunday, Jan. 16.

The La Grange Juneteenth Committee held a Martin Luther King Jr. Day walk from the Fayette County Courthouse to the Fayette Public Library on Monday, Jan.

The Texas Department of Public Safety released the names of the three people who died in the Jan. 10 crash on State Highway 71 west of La Grange.

COVID cases continue to spread across Fayette County at a high rate. As of press time there were an estimated 236 new cases here over the past seven days. Tuesday alone, 40 new cases of COVID were reported among students at La Grange ISD and three more cases among staff members. There have been no new fatalities from COVID in Fayette County in the last several weeks.

As the kids were heading back to school for the start of the spring semester so was La Grange ISD Middle School 8th grade science teacher Kim Landis. Landis, who last February was diagnosed with breast cancer, was certainly ready to come back.

Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches has announced the students achieving the Dean’s List designation for the 2021 fall semester, including Katy Shank from Schulenburg. To be eligible for the SFA Dean’s List, full-time undergraduate students must maintain a 3.25 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Shank is majoring in Theater with a focus in Tech and Design. A 2021 graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Hallettsville, she is the daughter of Tony and Susie Shank of Schulenburg.

“It took me downing four or five shots of whiskey at midnight, begging my husband to rid the house of knives, and [secretly] trying to drive myself to the ER to get the help I needed,” she recalled. “I drove with one eye closed to keep from seeing double. I had nobody to talk to.”
