The Texas Women’s League (TWL) will hold their annual Gala on March 5. TWL provides financial assistance to Fayette County Charities. A large part of the donations come from the silent auction, which is virtual this year. There will be a wide selection of beautiful and useful items this year. One item is the original ocean scene painting by artist Norma Chesnutt Bowman who is also a TWL member. On Friday, Feb. 18, at approximately 9:50 p.m. Deputy Dustin Kieschnick conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Kitchen Ln. in the Ellinger area for an equipment violation. A probable cause search was conducted, in which Oxycodone and Morphine pills were located, as well as marijuana and a firearm.

A Fayette County jury found Billy Polasek guilty of murder for the July 4, 2016 death of seven-month-old Logan Atkins. They sentenced him to life in prison plus a $10,000 fine. He will be eligible for parole after serving at least 30 years, prosecutors said.

New Garbage Carts Waste Management will be delivering new Waste Management branded garbage and recycling carts to City of La Grange residents beginning the week of Feb. 28.

After a year off last year because of COVID precautions, The Best Little Quilt Show in Texas returns to La Grange this weekend at the KC Hall. Above, Barbara Schellberg and Sandy Courrier prepare to hang one of the 209 quilts (more than normal) that will be on display at the show. Courrier is the chairwoman of this year’s show. To the right, more volunteers getting quilts ready for display. The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10.

For a half century between the 1870s and 1920s the Bluff Schuetzenverein invited people from across Texas to gather on the Bluff overlooking La Grange. They participated in marksmanship competitions, celebrated the holidays, enjoyed picnics, played games for young and old, and danced to German folk music. The Bluff became a favorite gathering place among German-Texans. In many ways, the Schuetzenverein provided the glue that held the community together. The Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites and the Texas Historical Commission are excited to bring back many of the Schuetzenverein’s traditions and celebrations with the first annual Bluff SchuetzenFest on Saturday, May 14.

There will be several contested races for spots on the Fayetteville city council. Here is who filed for those spots.

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Monday the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Black Chevy Equinox on Interstate-10 at approximately 11:15 am for a traffic violation. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 7.2 pounds of Fentanyl. The Fentanyl was located in a suitcase that had been altered to conceal the narcotics. It had a street value of approximately $637,000. Jose Guadalupe Ramos, 45, of Mission was arrested for Felony drug possession and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

Early voting seems to have really kicked into gear in Fayette County this week, and as of Wednesday about 1,200 (or 8-percent) of the registered voters here had cast their ballots. Early voting continues this week at the Fayette County Elections Office at 275 Ellinger Rd.
