Commissioners Talk About Burn Ban, Animal Shelter

Fayette County Commissioners Court met last Thursday, Oct. 27, and among the items on the agenda was a consideration to lift the burn ban. Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom said he requested the item to be placed on the agenda two weeks ago when there was a possibility of several inches of rain in the forecast. That rain never materialized. Commissioners decided to keep the burn ban in place. As it turned out, most of the County received a good amount of rain later that day on Thursday. Commissioners also extended the lease agreement between Fayette County and the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter for 25 years. The Animal Shelter organization owns the building, but the County owns the property. The Animal Shelter was halfway through its initial 50 year lease of the property. Assistant County Attorney Blake Watson said the Shelter requested a 25year extension in order to aid the organization with grant funding. Watson said the extension will show grant donors that the County is committed to a longterm relationship with the Shelter.

Concerns Raised About Groundwater

Fayette County Judge Joe Weber raised concerns about local groundwater resources at a Commissioners Court meeting last Thursday, Oct. 27. The discussion came up during an agenda item to authorize Fayette Water Supply Corporation (FWSC) to lay a new fourinch water line for a 26-lot subdivision along Fritsch Rd. near Rutersville. “I’m concerned about the future with all the development coming in,” Weber said. “People are going to punch holes in the ground wherever they can for water wells. Another option is commercial water. How does the developer decide?” “The biggest concern is, of course, the cost to get water to the property,” said FWSC General Manager Jim Rebecek. “The developer is required to pay for all line extensions or improvements, which can be considerable. Right now, we give them a price, and they’ll write a check in a heartbeat. All they’re looking for is inventory of lots.

What I Didn’t Buy at Warrenton

Fayette County’s fall 2022 antique/collectible extravaganza has ended and most vendors have packed up and left Fayette County. As always, the array of merchandise was dazzling, so I was sorely tempted, but rather than hauling home the following items that caught my eye, I settled for taking their photos.

Blazing the Fayette Co. Breakfast Taco Trail: First Stop – Taqueria Sergio’s

The hard-working people of Fayette County wake up early in the morning, but before they haul that first load of gravel, or hammer the first nail, or pour that big slab of concrete, they need some fuel. For this, they turn to the humble but mighty breakfast taco. The Record’s Jeff Wick and Andy Behlen are traveling to the taquerias of Fayette County to review their offerings. Last Friday, we visited Taqueria Sergio’s in La Grange. As you walk inside this little red building west of the old River Bridge in La Grange, you’ll notice the place is pretty laid back. You can order at the counter, or you can sit at a table and someone will take your order. If the place is busy, you’ll probably end up sharing a table with others. There’s a menu, but if you look around, you might see some regulars eating dishes that don’t appear on the menu.
