The Texas Highway Department announced it was making the long-anticipated widening of FM 155 at the northern edge of Weimar, where several fatal wrecks had occurred, a high priority. The narrow roadway, uneven surface and deep ditches punctuated by concrete culverts combined to make it a lethal stretch of highway. The highway department’s latest traffic count showed more than 12,000 vehicles a day passed over that stretch of motorway, compared to 500 a few miles north at Holman. The norm for a Texas farm-market road was 300 to 400 autos per day.
