Blinn Board of Trustees Receives Positive Fall Enrollment Report

The Blinn College District Board of Trustees received a preliminary enrollment report Tuesday indicating that fall 2022 registration has increased over last year’s figures. Dr. Becky McBride, Vice Chancellor for Student Services, shared that as of Monday, Sept. 12, Blinn’s unofficial fall enrollment was 17,255 students, a 2.52% increase from the same time period last year. This included a 3.08% increase in contact hours, which is included in the formula to determine state funding. The preliminary enrollment figures include: 6,614 Blinn-Bryan students (a 7.68% increase), 3,463 online students (an 18.67% decrease as more classes are offered on campus), 3,047 RELLIS students (a 10.76% increase), 2,071 Blinn-Brenham students (a 13.60% increase), 1,827 high school dual-credit students (a 14.69% increase), 64 Blinn-Schulenburg students (a 5.88% decrease), and 43 Blinn-Sealy students (a 13.16% increase). Registration remains open for fall 12-week classes that begin Monday, Sept. 26; 8-week classes that begin on Monday, Oct. 24; and 4-week classes that begin Monday, Oct. 17, and Monday, Nov. 14. Registration for winter minimester and spring classes open for current students at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, and for all students at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17. McBride also shared with the board that 1,491 students are residing on campus housing on the Brenham Campus, an increase of 225 compared to last fall. Blinn-Brenham, which opened the new Prairie Lea Hall in August, offers more student housing than any other community college in the State of Texas and registered students can still apply for housing for upcoming terms.

Fayette County Narcotics Seize Cocaine During Traffic Stop

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Saturday, Sept. 24, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, Jeremy Ellison, stopped a black Nissan 350 Z eastbound on Interstate 10 at mile marker 673 at approximately 10:40 a.m. for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver and passenger many criminal indicators were observed and consent to search the vehicle was granted.

Animal Shelter Update

As of Sept. 23, total intake for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 1,078: 467 dogs and 611 cats in need. As of Sept. 23, the shelter has 164 animals in care: 68 dogs/96 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner. Spay and neuter is the only way to manage the unwanted dog and cat population in Fayette County. The shelter offers a discount voucher program for spay/neuter for citizens of Fayette County. 106 and Still Going Strong

Mary Lee Mewis turned 106 years old Saturday, and the woman who is likely Fayette County’s oldest resident is still enjoying an amazing life. What did she want most for her birthday? “For a whole lot of people who were good to me to be together,” Mewis said Friday as she sat in the living room of the house outside La Grange she’s lived in since 1947. The La Grange High School Class of 1965 will hold its 57th year reunion on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event will be held at the Prairie Valley Dining Hall, located at 2510 Williams Road in West Point. Burn Ban Back On in Fayette Co.

At an Emergency Commissioners Court meeting Thursday an order was signed by County Judge Joe Weber restricting outdoor burning. Residents are warned to refrain from burning anything, including kitchen trash and brush piles.

County’s Coffers Up Half Million Due to Sales Tax Revenue Growth

With three-quarters of the year passed, business in Fayette County seems still to be booming. Retail sales tax collections are up 32.3% for the first nine months of the year, surpassing virtually every neighboring county. (Burleson County is up 37.0%, but is considerably smaller than Fayette.) And Schulenburg seems to be where that business is hottest.
