Each May, National Foster Care Month, we take the time to raise awareness of the children and families involved in the foster care system and the need for more people to step up to support them. Last year, there were 28,008 children in the Texas foster care system, 108 of whom were right here in Bastrop County.

Members of the La Grange American Legion Post 102 and VFW Post 5254 salute a tattered American flag which was burned along with other unserviceable American and Texas flags following a respectful and honorable retirement ceremony performed on April 23, 2025. Anyone having worn, faded or tattered American or Texas flags are encouraged to bring them to the Texas Heroes Museum located in the old county jail in La Grange, a designated collection location. All American and Texas flags that are no longer serviceable are properly disposed of from time to time with due and proper formality.

The ACC Texas MS 150 packed La Grange this weekend with roughly 4,800 cyclists and a whole bunch of support folks. The two-day ride, sponsored by American Communications Construction, is one of the largest fundraising events in the world in the fight against the disease multiple sclerosis.

Paint and primer disposed of in the trash caused a trash truck fire in La Grange last week. Here’s a statement put out by the city: “It has come to our attention that due to illegal disposal of paint and primer cans in the regular trash containers, Waste Management had a fire in their trash truck on Tuesday. They then had to return to Austin, so they missed picking up all of their route on Tuesday. They began the route on Thursday, but the truck again malfunctioned. ... This is the best time to remind customers that it affects everyone in the city when a few choose to illegally dispose of items that are on the list of items that can’t be thrown out in the regular trash. The Fayette County Recycle Center is a source for proper disposal.”

The Texas Education Agency released the 2022-23 school year ratings last week after a 19-month legal battle over how those ratings are calculated. Under the state’s school rating system, all districts and campuses got a letter grade for the 2022-23 school year.

Admin at Schulenburg Facility Was Fired For Cover-Up, Then Hired to Lead LG’s Care Inn Before Newspaper Uncovered Connection The nursing home administrator who was fired for allegedly covering up a sexual assault in Schulenburg had been working at Care Inn in La Grange until last Friday. Two weeks ago the Record received a response to our open records request regarding a state investigation into abuse at Paradigm at the Oak, the Schulenburg nursing home formerly known as Colonial Care Center.
