Louis Melcher, Photographer and Entrepreneur

Louis Melcher’s beautiful landscape photography has ensured his place of prominence in Fayette County’s history. Whereas many early photographers satisfied their creative energy with portrait photography, Melcher was prolific in documenting everyday life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in a manner that is both creative and instructive. Louis Melcher was born on July 15, 1870, the eldest of ten children born to parents, John Carl “J. C.” and Wilhelmine (Gebert) Melcher of the O’Quinn community, both of German ancestry. His father farmed, owned a general mercantile store, and dabbled with inventions—he had seven patents—and other entrepreneurial activities.

Second Annual ‘Walking With Faith’ Event Held

The second annual “Walking With Faith” event by the Kyla Faith Memorial took place at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater in La Grange Saturday night, Sept. 10. The free event included hot dogs, popcorn, kids activities and a lighted walk around the Amphitheater grounds to raise awareness for suicide and mental health.

The Fayette County Retired Teachers’Association will meet on Monday, Sept. 12, at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church located at 1215Von Minden in La Grange. The social time will begin at 1:30 p.m. with an ice cream social hosted by the Executive Board. The business meeting will begin at 2 p.m. followed by Bunko. All retired public school employees are welcome to attend these meetings, even if retired from another city, county, or state. The Local Chef Who Cooked for the Queen

Most folks in Fayette County hearing the news of Queen Elizabeth’s death can hardly imagine the pomp and ceremony of a Royal funeral and the upcoming coronation of the new British King, Charles III. That’s not the case for Chef Mike Morphew of Le Petite Gourmet Shoppe of La Grange. Morphew worked in the kitchens of Buckingham Palace from 1969 to 1971, where he cooked meals for the Royal Family.

$50,000 Donated for Park at Hope Hill

The Fayette County Disaster Recovery Team (FCDRT) handed the La Grange City Council a check for $50,000 at a meeting Monday. The donation will go toward development of a future park in the Hope Hill subdivision, the neighborhood built for survivors of the historic Hurricane Harvey Flood of 2017.
