When Jeremy Stewart built his house along Kruppa Rd. in 2023, he had the contractors raise the foundation almost a foot higher than the original plans. It’s a good thing he did, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative awarded scholarships to 160 graduating high school seniors across the cooperative’s 14-county service area, totaling $400,000. The $2,500 Scholarships of Excellence will help these students achieve their goal of earning a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree or a trade-andtechnical certificate. Among the winners were Fayetteville High School’s Lawson Fritsch and Rylee Fritsch.

Carrying on a nearly century-old promise, the La Grange Noon Lions Club is once again stepping up to bring the gift of sight to those in need. Inspired by Helen Keller’s historic challenge to the Lions in 1925 to become “knights of the blind,” the club continues to serve the visually impaired both locally and around the world.

Have you noticed a decline in the number of lightning bugs? Lots of folks seem to remember seeing a lot more of them years ago. This week I spoke with Ben Pfeiffer, founder of the nonprofit Firefly Conservation and Research.

The Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter took in 75 dogs and cats in need the week of April 26-May 2. The shelter jumped from 102 in care to 155 in care in seven days. As of May 2, the total intake for 2025 is 576: 297 dogs and 279 cats in need. There are 155 animals in care: 79 dogs and 76 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to a rescue partner.
