The Round Top-Carmine senior class of 2020 graduated outside at Festival Hill last Friday. Usually the ceremony takes place inside the Festival Hill concert hall, but the event was pushed back until June 5, held outside and attendance limited because of coronavirus precautions.

The coronavirus has changed a lot of things in our daily lives. One little example happened Monday as Leo Wick, president of the Fayette County Groundwater Conservation District, conducted the meeting of the organization’s board of directors on computer via a Zoom meeting. Wick said it was the first time he had ever used a computer (he used a laptop at a family member’s house and had a little help logging on, but the meeting ran smoothly).

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5254 Commander Andrew Kruppa and the VFW Auxiliary President Vicki Latapie have announced the kick-off of this year’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. High school students, grades 9-12 enrolled in a private, public or parochial high school or home study program in this area, have the opportunity to compete in the annual audio/essay contest and win scholarships.

The students listed on the Dean’s List of Academic Honors at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, are undergraduates who have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.5 out of a perfect 4.0 in all work attempted while enrolled in not less than 12 semester hours. The university would like to recognize the following students for earning the honor for the Spring 2020 semester.

People say good friends are hard to come by ... well what about seven of them? Bryce Moerbe, Carlos Guevara, Kyle Hartmann, Jaston Davis, Weston Wick, Chris Raborn and Laken Grimes or the Sampuesana 7, as they call themselves, can attest that true friendship is rare indeed.

Condolences

Margaret Lehmann of Giddings asked this question after reading my column about deer last Friday: “I just read your article on keeping deer out of your garden; I don’t have a deer problem, however the grasshoppers are about ready to carry us away. What can we do to get rid of them? They are eating our peaches, beans, okra and just about everything!”
