Camryn Smith, a 7th-grade student at La Grange Middle School, was recently honored for achieving an exceptional score on the ACT, the same test taken by college bound high school students. Camryn Smith took this above-grade-level test as a participant in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Duke TIP is a nonprofit organization that recognizes academically talented students and provides advanced learning opportunities that foster their intellectual and social growth.

Becky Weise of The Fayette County Record recently showed off this egg which was laid by one of her hens that did not have a shell, but rather it was held together by a soft membrane.

The Community League has temporarily suspended its baseball season. Play will resume on Sunday, July 12 where they left off.

The Catholic Daughters of Queen of the Holy Rosary, Court No. 2282 of Hostyn welcomed two new members at their monthly meeting in June. The Court was very excited to have Karen Matchett, who joined in May and her daughter Anabel, who joined at the June meeting. The mother-daughter duo proudly pledged together at the meeting. A picture was taken of Karen and Anabel with their immediate family, who are all members of the Hostyn CDA. Sacred Heart Catholic School Library in La Grange received a $500 donation from Court Annunciation No. 1962 of La Grange, Catholic Daughters of the Americas on June 23. This annual donation is given in memory of Msgr. Harry Mazurkiewicz, who had been the court chaplain for over 40 years, and in honor of Court Chaplain Fr. Alberto Carbajal Madera and Court Spiritual Advisor Deacon Mike Meismer. Cindy Fletcher, Sacred Heart School administrative assistant (left) received the donation from newly elected and installed 2020-2022 Court Annunciation No. 1962 Regent Shirley Antosh.

Michael Gatlin sent us this photo of a 1-3/4 lb. tomato he recently picked from his garden near O’Quinn. The tomato variety is Black Kringle. Gatlin said he has experienced problems in past seasons with ugly spots on his tomatoes caused by stink bugs. This year, Gatlin said he followed the advice of Record gardening columnist Andy Behlen by applying Neem oil once a week to deter the stink bugs. So far it seems to be working, he said.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on the evening of Tuesday, June 23, Deputy Adam Mack was dispatched to the area of the East Navidad River Bridge on Highway 90 near Schulenburg in reference to an 18-wheeler illegally dumping material. Deputy Mack located the truck and a large pile of wooden pallets the driver had dumped at the location. On being interviewed the driver admitted to dumping the pallets as he did not have anywhere else to leave them. Arrested and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center was 59-year-old Sachdev Brar of Forney for the offense of illegal dumping more than five lbs and less than 500 lbs.

Due to the success of last year’s scholarship fundraiser, the Navidad Valley CattleWomen (NVCW) 5K Ranch Run, the generous support of the sponsors and community, the Navidad Valley CattleWomen recently awarded $6,000 in scholarships. All applicants were high school seniors from Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca Counties with an interest in agriculture.
