Navidad Valley CattleWomen Award $6,000 In Scholarships

Due to the success of last year’s scholarship fundraiser, the Navidad Valley CattleWomen (NVCW) 5K Ranch Run, the generous support of the sponsors and community, the Navidad Valley CattleWomen recently awarded $6,000 in scholarships. All applicants were high school seniors from Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca Counties with an interest in agriculture.

There were over 50 applicants that represented young people from our communities with brains, civic and church involvement, work ethic and big plans for the future.

Two students were selected from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Hallettsville. Derrick Janak will be attending Texas State Technical College and studying to be a HVAC technician. He plans to be involved in his family ranch as well. The second recipient was Ryan Mudd who hopes to attend either Texas Tech or Texas A&M and work in ag business and ranching as well.

From Columbus High School, the recipient was Zane Wanjura. Zane will be attending Texas A&M and plans to work in politics as an advocate for agriculture. He already represents ag as a Texas 4-H Council officer and a livestock ambassador.

Another future Aggie is Julie Korenek of Fayetteville High School. Julie has big plans to become a veterinarian.

A&M will be the future home of a third scholarship recipient, Blake Sitka. Blake attends Hallettsville High School and has an interest in being a beef cattle nutritionist.

Also from Hallettsville High School is Kevin Konvicka. Kevin intends to attend Texas State and is interested in becoming a veterinary technician.

The final recipient is Kannin Mikulik from Flatonia High School who hopes to pursue a career in ag business.

The Navidad Valley CattleWomen, a local chapter of the Texas Cattlewomen, is a nonprofit organization that supports and promotes the beef industry. CattleWomen are currently planning the next 5K Ranch Run which will be held on Aug. 1 in Schulenburg in conjunction with the Schulenburg Festival. The local Navidad Valley works to support local youth with scholarships and provide quality information on the industry and how to incorporate beef into a healthy diet. Additionally, they work to support the community with targeted outreach projects that include a beefy twist. Cattlewomen function collectively to inform consumers of the importance of the industry and of the contributions it makes to the economy of our nation.
