Fayette County Unemployment at 5.2 Percent

The unadjusted unemployment rate in the Rural Capital Area of central Texas continues to trend down towards pre-COVID-19 levels, sliding to 7.1 percent in June 2020, down from 10.6 percent in May, according to figures released today by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The 7.1 percent unemployment rate in the nine-county Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA), represented 38,305 residents seeking employment; a decline of more than 31 percent from the month prior. The region’s unemployment rate remained below both the Texas (8.9 percent)* and national (11.2 percent)* rates.

Fall Antiques Shows Pushed Back in Hopes of Staying Alive

The fate of two of Fayette County’s biggest upcoming events – the county fair and the fall antiques shows – are still in limbo as the pandemic and its effects continue. Several show organizers, vendors and landowners affiliated with the fall antiques shows in northern Fayette County (which typically brings thousands of vendors and tens of thousands of shoppers) announced last week that they plan to move the shows back several weeks to Oct.

Construction on the new Bluebonnet Trails healthcare facility in La Grange has really ramped up in the past couple of weeks at 750 W. Travis St. (the site of the old Kenmar facility which was flooded by Hurricane Harvey). To guard against a similar occurrence at this facility, there will be parking spaces under the building, with the first floor of the actual building well above ground level. Round Top’s Big 150th Anniversary Rescheduled

Although the Round Top Sesquicentennial Committee, Town Council, and volunteers have been planning for months to host the town’s 150th Anniversary Celebration on August 1st of this year, the event has been rescheduled to May 8, 2021 to ensure the health and well-being of all involved. Currently, all celebratory activities are expected to remain the same, although there may be some minor adjustments as needed in the future. The Sesquicentennial Committee hopes that with better conditions all-around, guests will be enticed to spend Mother’s Day Weekend in Round Top creating memories of community spirit and family-friendly recreation.

The present status is that TEA has directed school districts to begin in-person instruction along with the option of at-home instruction to begin the school year.

Department of Housing and Community Affairs Awards Combined Community Action $70,000

Families and residents in Corpus Christi, Killeen, Giddings and Victoria that have been affected by the economic challenges due to COVID-19 have a source of help for homelessness prevention measures. Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs announced more than $960,000 has been allocated to the four organizations serving those cities. Funds were made possible through the Emergency Solutions Grants Program as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The nonprofit organizations receiving the funds are as follows:
