AMEN food pantry has made changes due to the coronavirus impact. The pantry hours have changed to Monday mornings 9 a.m. to noon as a drive-thru format only. This change was made due to the heat in the afternoons. The volunteers build food bags and disperse by family head count to the clients. There are no plans to switch back to clients entering the building, a decision will be made month to month when a change will occur. A reminder to all one may visit the pantry as often as needed until the food crisis has dissipated.

Now that the AMEN Food Pantry in La Grange has completed its move from their Mode Lane facility to their new, much bigger complex on Reynolds St., the Mode Lane building is being transformed into a new home for the La Grange Optimist Club as well as a base of operations for Fayette County Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers from both organizations began the process of remodeling the food pantry over the weekend (pulling up some old flooring to reveal some beautiful hardwood floors, left, and taking down some walls, right).

August 4-7, 1970 Fayette County Commissioners awarded the contract for the new courthouse roof to Adolph Matocha Jr., a La Grange building contractor. His bid of $11,200 was the lower of the two proposals offered.

Fayette County Commissioners Court voted 4-0 last Thursday to propose the same property tax rate as last year, $0.464 per $100 value of taxable property. Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom was absent from the meeting.

There’s usually a strong breeze atop the hill at Hostyn’s Holy Rosary Catholic Church – one of the highest points in Fayette County. Father Bob Knippenberg is used to it.

To the Editor: I have not sided with Judge I have not sided with Judge Weber on all issues since he has held the office of County Judge. However, something happened during the shutdown and quarantine measures.

At noon on Aug. 1, 1966, Allen Crum, the floor manager at the University Co-Op, looked out the window and witnessed several students dragging a limp teenager through the grass on the edge of the University of Texas campus.
