A new group called, “Healing Hearts” has been formed in Warda. The goal of this group is to give members who have lost loved ones some social time with old friends and to help create some new friends.

The Gonzales Inquirer • Jaylyn Molina, a Gonzales County man, who was arrested by the FBI last year pled guilty on Jan. 25 to charges of planning to provide support to terrorists and receiving child pornography.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that a suspicious person was located and arrested for possession of a controlled substance on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. Fayette County Deputy A.J. Gonzales was dispatched to a report of a suspicious person on N. Kirtley Road who was asking for a ride.

It is easy to take things for granted, even Christmas with its usual feasting and celebrating and kids opening presents. But this recent Christmas and this past year hopefully made us more reflective. While many of us are blessed in so many ways, others don’t have much and have a hard time getting by. The pandemic of 2020 and the loss of jobs by some has made everything more difficult than usual for some folks.

Second Chance Emporium recently donated $5,000 to Schulenburg/Weimar Area Parents As Teachers. Monies donated will be used to provide child development screenings, depression screenings, and evaluations of school readiness. Tara Murphy teaches third and fourth grade English, language arts and reading and social studies at Fayetteville ISD. Jan. 25-29 was Holocaust Remembrance Week. The third and fourth grade students participated by reading and analyzing a poem, “The Butterfly,” by Pavel Friedmann and designed remembrance butterflies or butterflies of hope (inspired by a newsclip they watched from the Holocaust Museum in Houston). Students were able to compare and contrast the freedom and hope the image of a butterfly represents to the stark imprisonment and devastating circumstances of Jewish ghettos. Students were particularly taken with the story of Anne Frank and an image of a pile of shoes from a photograph taken at Auschwitz-Birkenau. During recess, the students had the idea of placing our shoes in a pile and taking a photograph around it. They discussed how each pair of shoes represents a person’s life, and how shoes can be seen as a symbol of freedom because our feet (and our shoes) take us where we want to go. We were able to talk about how the pile of shoes represented the imprisonment and loss of rights for Jews across Europe. Holocaust Week provided the ability for cross-curricular instruction as we combined learning through art, history, and poetry.
